Aphorisms

A few aphorisms that I have coined up:

  • If you wish to take a bath, you better well be prepared to get wet.
    • I coined it up when talking about relationships. Many a time we are afraid to take the plunge being unsure of ourselves. But then, if social obligations are to be met, and marriage is on the cards, go in ready with experience.
  • Peace comes onto oneself only when one comes onto peace with thyself.
    • We so often are unhappy with the world in general, inevitably not realizing that the cause could be that we haven't realized what we ourselves truly are. I can vouch for this from personal experience. We spend our life masquerading to be that person we want to be, but in that quest we lose out on that wonderful person who exists. Be happy with what you are, and things shall fall into place.
  • A soul mate is one who is blemishless, or more aptly, one whom we have come to terms with.
    • When we can accept all the faults that our parents have (whom to be are blemishless), why not someone else?
  • Happiness stems from being happy for others.
    • I have spent a considerable amount of life being selfish, and can now say that realizing joy from others' success, is something words cant express.
  • A beautiful woman is one that tingles not just the eyes.
    • This one is for all us men.
  • The conquest of a woman is a victory that is at most Pyrrhic.
    • A lie, but what the hell, let me say it nonetheless!
  • This is Gautam Buddha's, but something I greatly believe in. “From expectations stems sorrow.”
    • We end up being so unhappy with the people around us, primarily because we expect them to conform to the way we want them to behave. When we ourselves might not conform to their ideas, how can we expect them to do so? This is also in line with a previous post.
  • The concept of feminism is as chauvinistic as that of chauvinism.
    • For an elaboration, look up chauvinism in the dictionary.
  • The endearing human frailty of hope is both an aphrodisiac and an indulgence.
    • Too often, at least in my case, I hope for things that I know I shall never possess. Yet, we are so enamored by the thought of possession that we never want to let go.
  • Life is the longest game of musical chairs that you shall play. (My most used)
    • I wrote this in reflection of the many groups that I have been in. Its amazing how we flit through life living with some people and then so easily move on. And we return to see them so different, almost alien at times.

One of my favourites has been
'Look not for the best person for you; look instead for the person who brings out the best in you."
And then we have the famous line from 'Being Cyrus', "Happy families are alike in their happiness, but unhappy families, ah, they are so very unique in their misery."
Voltaire's words, "Ask a toad what is beauty....; he will answer that it is a female with two great round eyes coming out of her little head, a large flat head, a yellow belly and a brown back."

I love the one about the conquest of women. It isn't that untrue.

Mine:
“Honesty is not the best policy, it just gives you better sleeping habits.”

Not mine:
“Holy cows can be so much bull.” -- don't know who wrote it first, but I've definately read it somewhere. Keep repeatin' it.

“Madness in great ones must not unwatch’d go.” -- Shakespeare, from Hamlet I think.

“Being right too soon is socially unacceptable.” -- R. A. Heinlein

Lot more where these came from...

hmmmm... u got me thinking...
two things....
1. the skill in usage of any language is the simplest way in which u make people understand the toughest parts.... very important correct if i am wrong.. flowery language is cool but wasnt the emphasis on the matter rather than the display of thy linguistic skills!!
2. most of the thoughts were well placed but dont u think speaking like buddha is a lot easier than acting like one.....

if anything can go wrong..it most surely will!
hope u get the idea...

That's a nice original piece of work I must say.No plagiarism in this one. Some of the proverbs if I may call them so,I could relate to.Others seemed to be a bit abstruse.Nonetheless,it was a good one.I know that some of the proverbs have come straight from the heart from personal experiences.Keep up the good work.

Here's one I completely believe in. (but find difficult to follow)
"'Tis easy enough to be pleasant when life flows along like a song,
But the man worth while is the one who will smile when everything goes dead wrong"

One more was one the fav. line of my one my profs.(A. Balasubramanian) Love him for this.
"All problems have solutions. We find some, we don't find some"

One from Dhirubhai Ambani(at a Reliance AGM i guess)
"Our dreams have to be bigger. Our ambitions higher. Our commitment deeper. And our efforts greater. This is my dream for Reliance and for India."

And one final one from yours truly. This was a part of a passionate conversation at college.
"You can give me a million reasons for failure. There's just one for success. You want to."
